Chemistry Grading Policy

Scale
93-100 = A 72-77 = C
90-91 = A- 70-71 = C-
88-89 = B+ 68-69 = D+
82-87 = B 62-67 = D
80-81 = B- 60-61 = D-
78-79 = C+ < 60% = F
All grades are set.
  • no exceptions to this grading scale

Quarter Grade
  • 70% from tests
  • 20% from labs and projects
  • 10% assignments
Year Grade
  • 2/9 from the numeric score for each of the four quarters (total of 8/9)
  • 1/9 from the numeric score for the end-of-the-year final
Make-Up Tests
  • taken immediately when the student returns
    • students returning on the day of another scheduled test will take that instead
  • taken during class unless other arrangements are made
  • Multiple days absent:
    • one day for each day absent will be given to make up the test
Exams
  • handed back after two school days
  • You must talk to the teacher in advance if it will be missed due to a pre-excuse or a school event.
End-of-the-Year Final
  • curved
  • counts for 1/9 of your year grade
Assignment Problems
  • each problem is worth three points
    • 1 point for a proper formula
    • 1 point for showing the work and units
    • 1 point for the correct answer with units
Cheating
  • Cheating results in a zero score.
  • A few examples of cheating include:
    • using any notes whatsoever during an exam
    • talking to another student during an exam
    • looking at another student or at that student's desk during an exam
    • having class material available during an exam
      • such as in your calculator
      • or under your test papers
    • submitting someone else's work as your own
Assignments and Lab Write-Ups
  • due two school days after completion, unless stated otherwise
  • each person is to turn in their own
  • if more than one name is put on a paper, the first name gets the grade
  • due at the start of the hour, or it is considered late
  • 20% is taken off of a late paper turned in before the start of the next class
  • assignments are not accepted after they are more than one day late
  • labs will not be accepted (and will be given a zero) if your lab group failed to:
    1. follow all SAFETY PROCEDURES
    2. maintain a SERIOUS ATTITUDE at all times
    3. do a proper CLEAN-UP of the lab station and equipment
    4. RETURN all EQUIPMENT and SUPPLIES to their proper place

SAFETY

1. The science lab is for serious work.
2. Do not perform unauthorized experiments.
3. Study your lab before doing it.
4. Wear goggles at all times. Failure to do so will result in a zero for the lab.
5. Know where the safety equipment is and how to use it.
6. Report any accident, injury, or incorrect procedure to your teacher at once.
7. Never taste any chemical substance.
8. When heating a substance, keep open ends of the container away from people.
9. Place broken glass and solid substances in designated containers.
10. Long hair should be tired back, and avoid wearing clothing with loose sleeves as it may catch fire.


FIRST-AID

Burns.
     Flush with cold water for a few minutes.
Fire.
      1. Stop•Drop•Roll (if on you).
      2. Wrap person in fire blanket (if someone else).
      3. Use fire extinguisher to put out other fires.
Foreign matter and chemicals in eyes.
      Flush with plenty of water from the eye wash.
Poisoning.
      Contact teacher immediately.
Bleeding.
      Apply pressure to wound, contact teacher.
Chemical spills.
      If on desk or floor: wipe up the chemicals with a dry paper towel, then wash area with plenty of water.
      If on yourself: wash off with plenty of water in the sink.
