Nitrate Day One Lab
OBJECTIVE
- Observe
evidence of a chemical reaction.
INFO
- Cu +
2AgNO3 --> 2Ag + Cu(NO3)2
MATERIALS
- about one to two grams AgNO3
- 250-mL Beaker A
- about a foot of copper wire
- mass balance
DATA
- mass of
Beaker A = g
- mass of
Beaker A & AgNO3 = g
- mass of
Cu wire before reaction = g
- mass of
AgNO3 (b - a) = g
PROCEDURE
- wear splash-guard goggles
- cut 1 ft of Cu wire and mass to the
thousandths place
- coil around pen or pencil
- wash, dry, and label Beaker A (250 mL)
- mass out Beaker A to thousandths place
- add AgNO3 to Beaker A & mass
out dry AgNO3
*** BACK TO DESKS ***
- half fill Beaker A with distilled water
- leave the water on the back counter
- wash & dry a stirring rod, then dissolve the AgNO3
o
keep AgNO3
off of clothes & skin
o
wash and dry again
the stirring rod
- place the wire into Beaker A & observe
- place Beaker A, AgNO3, and Cu on
back counter
OBSERVATIONS
- record
evidence for a chemical reaction
