Silver Nitrate Day Five Lab

OBJECTIVE

INFO

Mass out to thousandths (3 decimal places)

DATA

  1. mass of Beaker A with AgNO3        =        g
  2. mass of filter paper                      =        g
  3. mass of Beaker A, filter paper & AgCl        =        g

PROCEDURE

  1. Mass out Beaker A with the AgNO3.
  2. Pour 75 mL distilled water into Beaker A and stir to dissolve the AgNO3.
  3. Pour 75 mL saturated NaCl solution into Beaker B.
  4. Pour Beaker B (NaCl) into Beaker A (AgNO3).
  5. Place Beaker A on hotplate and set on high.

*** Back to Seats ***

  1. Heat Beaker A, the AgCl(S) and NaNO3 solution, until it boils.
  2. Decant the NaNO3 solution (it's CLEAR) through a funnel and filter paper, and pour down the drain.
    1. SAVE THE WHITE STUFF (AgCl(S))
    2. Don't poke a hole in filter paper!
  3. Place the filter paper into Beaker A with the white AgCl(S) and put in the fume hood.
  4. Wash with soap Beaker B, the glass stirring rod, and the funnel, and dry.  Return trays.

*** Part Two ***

  1. Mass out Beaker A, filter paper, and AgCl(S).
  2. Scrape AgCl into bag and bucket.
  3. Wash with soap, and dry Beaker A.
  4. Enter data: silver_nitrate_day_5
  5. Due at the end of the period.

For all calculations:

CALCULATIONS

  1. molar mass of AgCl                          =        g/mol
