OBJECTIVE

• CoCl₂ (cobalt chloride) reacts with water and changes color

MATERIALS

• CoCl₂ paper
• 1L-beaker
• candle

DATA

• original color of CoCl₂ paper
• color of CoCl₂ paper with small drop of water
• color of CoCl₂ paper rubbed in the condensate

PROCEDURE

1. Note original color of CoCl₂ paper.
2. Place a small drop of water on the CoCl₂ paper.
3. Note color change of the CoCl₂ paper.
4. Light the candle, place 1L-beaker over it until the flame goes out.
5. Rub the CoCl₂ paper through the condensate formed near the top of the beaker.
6. Note color change of the CoCl₂ paper.
