Candle Lab Five

OBJECTIVE

• "Does a burning candle produce CO₂?"

MATERIALS

• candle
• limewater
• test tube
• straw

PROCEDURE

1. Pour half a test tube of limewater.
2. Place the straw about half an inch into the limewater.
3. Gently blow air through a straw into the limewater.
4. Note changes.
5. Dump out limewater and rinse test tube.
6. Light the candle and briefly hold the flask over the flame without touching the wax.
7. Pour half a test tube of fresh limewater into the flask and agitate.
8. Note changes.
9. Clean up.
